The Back to the City Festival returned with a bang on Saturday, October 12, transforming Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown into the epicentre of African hip-hop and street culture. Celebrating 30 years of South African freedom and paying homage to hip-hop’s golden era, the festival delivered an unforgettable experience with over 100 local and international acts.
Headlining this year’s event was US rapper Benny The Butcher, the festival’s first international headliner, who electrified the crowd with his critically acclaimed lyricism. He shared the stage with a powerhouse line-up of South Africa’s finest, including Nasty C, Blxckie, Maglera Doe Boy, Big Zulu, Nadia Nakai, Priddy Ugly, and Stogie T.
A highlight of the 2024 festival was the special Heritage section, curated to honour the trailblazers who have shaped the local hip-hop scene. This year’s tribute celebrated the 30-year legacy of Kwaito legend Thebe, whose first hit was released in 1994, coinciding with the advent of democracy. The festival also recognised the 20th anniversary of seminal hip-hop albums from icons like Zubz, Mr Selwyn, and Pitch Black Afro. A moving tribute to the late HHP was also featured, with his son, Leano, representing his enduring influence.
More than just a music festival, Back to the City 2024 was a vibrant celebration of urban culture. Attendees immersed themselves in a dynamic street art experience, watched thrilling DJ and dance battles, and explored a bustling Newtown Market featuring over 40 thrift stalls, sneaker traders, and vinyl collectors. The festival also featured basketball courts, skate ramps, and graffiti areas, creating a truly immersive cultural hub.
Hennessy, the headline partner for 2024, provided an exclusive VIP experience and an immersive activation area, further solidifying its commitment to supporting hip-hop culture.
With a record turnout, the festival served as a cultural pilgrimage for hip-hop enthusiasts, celebrating the past, present, and future of the movement. The success of Back to the City 2024 reaffirmed its status as Africa’s largest and most authentic hip-hop festival.
