Strokes, often referred to as the “silent killer,” continue to be a major health concern in South Africa. According to Liberty’s 2024 Claims Statistics, strokes are among the top five most common health-related claims, constituting more than 5% of all claims reported.
As part of Heart and Stroke Awareness Month, Liberty has partnered with the Stroke Survivors Foundation to host a fundraising golf day. The event aims to raise much-needed funds to provide stroke survivors and their families with the resources, support, and care they need to navigate life after a stroke.
Every hour in South Africa, 10 adults suffer a stroke, and 225 people die daily due to stroke or heart disease, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Importantly, one in four strokes occurs in people under the age of 65, proving that strokes are not only a concern for the elderly.

“Behind every statistic is a family whose life has been changed forever,” says Marees Bostander, Liberty’s Head of Brand Strategy. “That is why Liberty is proud to stand alongside the Stroke Survivors Foundation in creating awareness, raising funds, and most importantly, helping survivors access the care and community support they need. Our commitment is clear: all humans are welcome, and we are in it with them through life’s most unexpected challenges.”
The Stroke Survivors Foundation, founded by Charlene Murray and George Scola, both stroke survivors themselves, continues to play a vital role in supporting and building communities around those affected. With initiatives like the fundraising golf day, the Foundation can extend its reach and impact, ensuring stroke survivors are not left to walk their journey alone.
Liberty remains dedicated to empowering South Africans with the knowledge, tools, and support to take control of their health and their future. By driving awareness during Heart and Stroke Awareness Month, Liberty is reinforcing its commitment to protecting lives and enabling financial freedom, while also addressing one of the country’s most pressing health challenges.
