Rola Pelo Championing Mental Wellness Across South Africa

  • Category: Lifestyle

In a world where mental health challenges are often overlooked, Rola Pelo, a dynamic non-profit mental wellness organisation, is leading the charge to ensure that mental health awareness reaches every corner of South Africa – both semi-urban and rural. With a mission to break the stigma around mental health and promote well-being, Rola Pelo is making strides in creating a healthier, more inclusive society.

South Africa faces unique challenges in addressing mental health. High levels of unemployment, poverty, and trauma-compounded by a lack of accessible mental health resources have left many communities vulnerable. The organisation is a beacon of hope, providing education and advocacy to empower individuals and communities to prioritise mental wellness.

Operating in diverse settings, the organisation conducts workshops, outreach programs, and awareness campaigns tailored to the needs of different communities. In rural areas, where access to mental health professionals is limited, Rola Pelo equips community leaders and caregivers with tools to recognise and support those in need. In semi-urban spaces, the organisation tackles issues such as workplace stress, youth mental health, and the growing pressures of modern life.

One of organisation’s key objectives is to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health. Misconceptions and cultural taboos often prevent individuals from seeking help, leaving many to suffer in silence. Through community dialogues, storytelling, and social media campaigns, fostering open conversations about mental health.

“We find mostly that people can’t properly articulate what they’re going through, and in those communities we find language barrier in terms of people struggling to identify what they’re going through. Our role is not only to bring awareness but to help people empower themselves, we work with organisations that are able help people harness their skills, so to  break the circle of abuse and stigma around mental health issues.” says Nthabiseng Ngoepe, Rola Pelo Founder.

Furthermore, Rola Pelo standout initiatives is its focus on men’s mental health, a critical yet often overlooked area. In many South African cultures, men are expected to embody strength, stoicism, and self-reliance. This social conditioning has contributed to an alarming trend: men are less likely to seek help for mental health struggles and are more vulnerable to substance abuse and suicide.

The organisation is working tirelessly to dismantle these harmful stereotypes. Through targeted campaigns and support groups, the organisation creates safe spaces for men to express their emotions without fear of judgment. These initiatives aim to show that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but a path to healing.

Rola Pelo’s work is not just about advocacy, it’s about action. Their programs demonstrate that with the right tools, education, and support, communities can thrive. However, the organisation cannot do it alone. Partnerships with government, business, and individuals are essential to expanding their reach and ensuring that every South African has access to mental wellness resources.
