Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has held engagements with the country’s security cluster, on her efforts to intensify safety in the tourism sector for the local and international tourists visiting different destinations in our shores.

This initiative is part of the department’s National Safety Strategy on reviewing the training curriculum for tourism monitors. Monitors will be recruited and deployed in terms of identified hotspots and other medium to high crime areas.

Minister de Lille addressed stakeholders discussing ways to mitigate the risks of safety faced by travelled and eluded that crime is a matter which affects tourism in many parts of the world and this has been echoed by several tourism ministers which she had engaged with from all over the world in recent weeks. South Africa is no different and across the world, countries are grappling with these issues with instability and wars in some countries.

Minister De Lille also spoke during a meeting with various stakeholders including MECs for Tourism, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the private sector including the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) and the National Prosecuting Authority, with the aim to discuss tourism safety and actions that government in partnership with the private sector will take to enhance tourism safety.

Apart from TBCSA which represents several major tourist associations, stakeholders at today’s Tourism Safety Dialogue included FEDHASA, BARSA, SATOVITO and many other role players in the tourism sector.

“Tourism is not only an economic activity but an essential vehicle that promotes a mutual understanding between a tourist and host community. Tourism is recognised for its immense potential and its significant contribution to the economy.” said Minister De Lille.

The objectives of the National Safety Strategy which was established in 2018, are among others to set out the short, medium and long-term tourism safety priorities; empower all spheres of government, tourism stakeholders, business/ private sector, tourism organisations and other relevant stakeholders to establish and coordinate a partnership-based approach to tourism safety and incident management initiatives.

The management, training and development of the Tourism Monitors is functional under the Tourism Monitors Programme (TMP) which is part of the broader government intervention that involves training, mentorship and deployment of unemployed youth in identified tourism attractions and sites.

The key objectives are to enhance tourism safety awareness at key tourism attractions and sites, up-skilling of unemployed youth and reducing tourist vulnerabilities.

The key performance areas of the appointed Tourism Monitors (TMs) include but not limited to patrolling within the identified attractions and site/ areas, raising tourism awareness and provide information to tourists and report any crime incidents to SAPS and other relevant enforcement agencies.

Safety is one of the major issues affecting the tourism sector and as partners, government and the stakeholder collective agreed tourism that this is a priority that needs to be addressed collectively, in order to grow the sector and remove any obstacles standing in the way of that objective.

“An enhanced visitor experience takes into consideration the enhancement of local destinations sites through cleanliness, safety and security, access to information, as well as provision of quality services and an authentic experience. Crime is a matter which affects tourism in many parts of the world and this has been echoed by several tourism ministers which I have engaged with from all over the world in recent weeks. South Africa is no different and across the world, countries are grappling with these issues with instability and wars in some countries.” Minister de Lille concluded.

The minister had an agreement during their engagement to face challenges related to safety and security sooner than later. In her engagements with the private sector, they agreed that safety and security issues needed to be confronted head-on and implement actions to arrest the problem.
