A journey of growth and inspiration

Priscilla Chibi is an Operations Administrator at the Trans African Concessions (TRAC), where she manages the eTag operations for all toll plazas along the N4 corridor, which spans from Pretoria East in Gauteng to Mozambique.

Priscilla works for a phenomenal company that manages and ensures that the N4 corridor remains in prime condition for road users and facilitates seamless cross-border trade and tourism. Her role in managing eTag operations for TRAC is therefore absolutely crucial. By overseeing these operations, Priscilla contributes significantly to maintaining this vital trade route’s efficiency and effectiveness, supporting regional connectivity and economic development.

Her journey with TRAC began in 2009 as a toll collector. Inspired by a pioneering female plaza manager, who exemplified leadership and knowledge sharing, Priscilla saw a path for herself in the company’s leadership ranks. Her ambition and dedication led her from her initial role to becoming a receptionist and eventually advancing to her current position, highlighting TRAC’s commitment to internal career development.

Roles, responsibilities, and challenges

As an Operations Administrator, Priscilla’s daily responsibilities are varied. They encompass site visits to toll plazas, managing tag registrations, and assisting with eTag top-ups and client enquiries. She is currently leading an initiative to transition large cash clients to eTags, aiming to streamline their travel experience on the N4 corridor. The role presents challenges, particularly in addressing the public’s understanding of eTag technology. Priscilla approaches these challenges with enthusiasm and a customer-centric mindset, focusing on clear communication and customer satisfaction.

Career development and TRAC’s support

TRAC has played a crucial role in Priscilla’s professional growth. Starting from being a toll collector, she has benefited from TRAC’s support through various internal growth opportunities and educational programmes. The company has funded her studies, including diplomas in Public Management and Personnel Management, as well as a Management Development Programme (MDP) certificate. TRAC’s commitment to the professional and career development of its female employees is evident in its comprehensive support structures, which include mentorship programmes, leadership training, and career advancement initiatives. By investing in its workforce, TRAC not only enhances individual capabilities but also fosters a diverse and dynamic environment that drives organisational success and empowers women to reach their highest potential.

Advice and encouragement for young women

Priscilla’s advice to young women aspiring to pursue careers in operations or management is to aim high and complement their dreams with relevant qualifications. Recognising and navigating the unique challenges faced by women in the workplace is essential. By embracing these challenges with respect and strategic insight, young women can effectively position themselves for success.

Future goals and aspirations

Reflecting on her steady progress within TRAC, Priscilla is enthusiastic about the evolving landscape of operations, particularly with technological advancements. While artificial intelligence will bring significant changes, she believes that the human element remains indispensable in operations. Priscilla’s primary goal is to enhance her leadership skills, for which she is actively participating in development programmes and mentoring. She views strong leadership as essential for continued success and career advancement.
