Castle Milk Stout celebrates the second Ancestor’ Day

Castle Milk Stout, together with the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA) and the National House of the Traditional and Khoisan leaders savoured the moment in celebration of the highly anticipated Ancestors’ Day. This year’s celebration marked the second Ancestors’ Day commemoration since its inception in May 2021.
“May is Africa Month and we wanted to make sure that people use the first weekend of this month to remember those that came before us, who taught us our ways as Africans. Basically, we wanted to open Africa Month by commemorating and remembering who we truly are,” says Khensani Mkhombo, the Brand Manager for Castle Milk Stout.
Mkhombo adds that Castle Milk Stout together with CONTRALESA, the National House of Traditional Khoisan Leaders amongst other stakeholders has embarked on a campaign to lobby the government to officially declare 8 May as Ancestors Day on the national calendar.
Actor and seasoned broadcaster, Nimrod Nkosi facilitated the celebration event, which was well-attended by guests from various traditional and spiritual spheres and included talks by Bishop Joshua Maponga III, who focused on the Pan-African Journey of Spirituality. Maponga’s educational talk was followed by an inspirational talk by broadcaster, Hulisani Ravele who detailed her own spiritual journey and the role that the Castle Milk Stout brand has played in her growth towards spiritual enlightenment; titled “Nḓila: A personal journey of discovery”.

Ravele shared with the audience her journey of tracing her ancestry and how it helped her understand who she really is. “I realised that I didn’t know much about who I am and decided to go back home to ask questions,” she explained. Ravele added that it is important for especially young people to learn about not just their clan names, but about their ancestors.
CONTRALESA’s Secretary-general HRH Zolani Mkiva followed with an address on the Congress’ partnership with Castle Milk Stout and the significance of observing Ancestors’ Day as Africans. Mkiva expressed his gratitude towards Castle Milk Stout, and further commended the brand’s passion and commitment towards the initiative, as he highlighted the need for a permanent day of observing Ancestors Day, every year.
Sangoma, Big Brother Season 3 winner and certified African Doctor, Mpho Wa Badimo shared her personal experience during a talk titled “Understanding Spirituality in a modern era: From a youth perspective”.
Spiritual teacher, African storyteller, sangoma and gobela; Gogo Dineo Ndlanzi closed off the speaker’s list as she moved the crowd with a performance and educational message titled, “The essence of African Spirituality in Modern times.” Gogo Dineo Ndlanzi, who is the founder of Ndlanzi Institute of Spiritual Healing, said that social media has become our teacher and impepho trends on social media, yet people fail to understand the power of medicine that is beyond its usage.
The day’s proceedings concluded with the various stakeholders in attendance signing a letter directed to Minister Nathi Mthethwa, as the Director of Arts & Youth Development, Moleleki Ledimo was in attendance, on behalf of The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
As music and dance form a huge part of African Spirituality, the talks were further amplified by performances by musicians Phila Dlozi, Msaki, dance group Umzekelo and Poet, Nue Sam. The day culminated with a music set, under the sun by Dj Shimza on the decks.
